Frequently Asked Questions
Starting counselling can feel like a big step, and it’s normal to have questions. Below, I’ve answered some of the most common ones to help you feel more comfortable about beginning your journey. If you don’t see your question here, please don’t hesitate to contact me.
1. What can I expect in my first session?
Your first session is primarily about us getting to know each other and ensuring you feel safe and heard. We’ll discuss:
- What brings you to counselling
- Your hopes and goals for therapy
- Any concerns or questions you have
- How we might work together
- A contract will be provided between you and I
There’s no pressure to share anything you’re not ready to, we’ll go at your pace. Many clients feel nervous beforehand but leave feeling relieved to have taken this first step.
2. How many sessions will I need?
This varies depending on your unique needs. Some clients benefit from short-term work (6-12 sessions) to address a specific issue, while others prefer longer-term support for deeper exploration. We’ll regularly check in on your progress.
You are always in control of how long you continue.
3. Is everything I say confidential?
Yes, with a few very rare exceptions required by law (e.g., risk of serious harm to yourself or others). Your privacy is my top priority, what you share stays between us. I follow strict BACP ethical guidelines on confidentiality. We can discuss this in more detail during our first meeting if you’d like.
4. How do I know if counselling is right for me?
If you’re feeling stuck, overwhelmed, or simply want to understand yourself better, counselling can help. You don’t need to be in "crisis" to benefit. Therapy is for anyone seeking growth or support.

5. What’s the difference between counselling and just talking to a friend?
While friends offer invaluable support, a counsellor provides:
- Trained, objective guidance (no personal bias)
- Evidence-based tools to create change
- Complete confidentiality
- A space entirely focused on you
